Boudoir Do’s and Don’ts

March 15, 2014

I would say that 95% of my clients have never done a boudoir shoot before, so when girls say to me “I’ve never done anything like this before, and I’m nervous,” it’s really no surprise.  I am here for my clients every step of the way, everything from picking out outfits to discussing nail color choices, because I want them to feel prepared for their session and be set up for success in getting the most out of their session.  I’m of the opinion that as long as you’re prepared, there is less of a reason to be anxious.  Also, I’ve been doing this for years and I’ve learned from mistakes.  Part of my job as an expert in this field is to pass this knowledge based on experience on to my clients and anyone out there thinking about a boudoir session.

These Do’s and Don’ts aren’t going to answer every question you might have, but they will help you feel prepared for your session and hopefully help ease the nerves:

Do’s

    • Do spend some time on pinterest and see what types of outfits/images are out there.  There is much more to boudoir then just what you can find at your local Victoria’s Secret (though they do have some amazing stuff) so it’s good to see what other options you might have to get a better idea of what is going to be the perfect fit for you.
    • Do look around for lingerie.  VS is great, but there are many more options that are more interesting, and beautiful, and sometimes less expensive.
    • Do ask me for suggestions!  I’m always here to help pick the perfect thing, and I have a couple of favorite places I’d love to share.
    • Do know that if you aren’t sure which outfits you love most, bring a bunch and we can decide when you arrive.
    • Do make sure that your new lingerie has had tags removed, and favorite staples have been through the laundry.
    • Do drink more water the week before your shoot.  It helps your skin stay moisturized, and it’s just good for you.
    • Do shave/wax everything that needs it!  Waxing should be done a couple of days before your session so that your skin isn’t irritated.
    • Do think about your nails.  If you have polish, make sure that it looks nice and isn’t chipped.  In general I think that more subtle looks are better; french, light pink, or nude.
    • Do give yourself some time before the shoot; take a hot bath, pamper yourself, let yourself become the calm, confident goddess you are!
    • Do make sure to wear loose fitting clothing an hour prior and on the way to the shoot.  Tight clothes, like bras, can create unwanted lines on your skin.  Also, maybe wear a button or zip up shirt as to not disturb your hair.
    • DO COMMUNICATE!  This shoot is all about you and the most important thing is that you are comfortable and having a good time 🙂

Don’ts

    • Don’t forget SHOES!  It’s something that is easily forgotten but is so very important!  Make sure they are new or clean.  (Extra tip: I love black and nude)
    • Don’t forget to also bring other accessories such as stockings, jewelry, or simple props you might want to use during the shoot, and be creative when choosing outfits.  Even something as simple as a cardigan can be beautiful!
    • Don’t worry too much.  We’re going to have a fun time and create beautiful images together 🙂
