Vendor Spotlight | 5K Wedding Run

February 24, 2016

Megan Snow, creator and owner of the 5K Wedding Run, has become a great friend of mine over the last few months.  We hosted a wedding vendor event in September, which turned an acquaintance into a dear friend.  As I jump back into doing vendor spotlights here in KC, I knew I wanted to share her story and let everyone know about the 5K Wedding Run and Bridal Expo

Tell me a little bit about the 5K Wedding Run and Bridal Expo?

It is a 3.1 mile fun walk/run for engaged couples to dress up in tutus, veils, tuxedo t-shirts, etc. and celebrate their engagement with their bridal party! Every participant gets a free ticket to the post race bridal expo, which takes place immediately following the 5K inside the Ritz Charles Ballroom (located at the finish line of the 5K). There is live entertainment, prizes, food, etc. The event also makes a donation to a Kansas City non-profit, Bra Couture KC. We are expecting double the participants we had last year, which will end up totaling 350+!!

What got you started in your business?

Well, that is a funny story! I was first interested based on the idea of how great it would be to help engaged couples start their marriage off debt-free vs. borrowing money to afford their wedding. This led to the idea of planning an event where couples could run a 5K and have their friends and family “sponsor” them in the 5K as a cash gift registry. While this concept was well received, what I learned from hosting the first 5K Wedding Walk/Run & Bridal Expo in October of 2015 is that 90% of engaged couples were far more excited about dressing up with their bridal party, attending the bridal expo at the finish line and supporting the local non-profit, Bra Couture KC. So, now the Spring 2016 event will be just that! A really fun, stress-free event for Kansas City engaged couples and their entire bridal parties.

What do you enjoy about working in the wedding industry?

I love how amazingly supportive the local wedding industry is here in Kansas City. It sounds cheesy, but I have only been involved in the industry for 9 months or so, and I’ve experienced several business owners jump in with advice, others volunteering their time to make the first event successful, some with vendor referrals and even others who have become really great friends! It has been awesome.

What sets you apart?

This is different from other 5K’s because it not about the competition. Bridal parties have a fun and stress-free event to attend (that they don’t have to plan), and they also get to dress up in tutus, bridal veils, tuxedo t-shirts and even vintage wedding dresses! It is different than any other bridal show because it offers the big bridal show experience (watching a fashion show, winning luxury wedding prizes, etc.), but it has more of an intimate environment (not too my vendors to where it is overwhelming.)

What inspires you?

People. I love event planning and I love the challenge of creating something new, but ultimately my motivation/inspiration comes from getting participants, vendors and sponsors involved and working my hardest to make sure they all have a great time.

When you have free time, what do you love to do?

Spend time with my boyfriend, Cody and our pets, Charlie (cat) and Clyde (dog). I also spend quite a bit of time with my family. We all like to play games ranging from Sequence to Heads Up.

What is your biggest tip for brides and grooms?

My biggest tip would be to enjoy the planning process. I have heard wedding planning can be overwhelming to where you just want to “get it over with.” Take it one day and exciting piece of the puzzle at a time and remember it’s all about the journey, not the end destination. 🙂

The next run is on April 17th, 2016 at The Ritz Charles in Overland Park!  For more information you can check out the 5K Wedding Run and Bridal Expo’s website, or facebook page!
