Boudoir Do’s and Don’ts

I would say that 95% of my clients have never done a boudoir shoot before, so when girls say to me “I’ve never done this, and I’m nervous,” it’s really no surprise. Because it’s not something that most of my clients have done before, I like to be able to give them as much information as I can. I’m of the opinion that as long as you’re prepared, there is less of a reason to be anxious. Also, I’ve been doing this for years and I’ve learned from mistakes. Part of my job as an expert in this field is to pass this knowledge based on experience on to my clients.
Most clients may have a few questions, but some don’t even know what to ask. To get the most out of your session, there are definitely some things that you should keep in mind to better prepare yourself:
Do’s
- Do drink more water the week before your shoot. It helps your skin stay moisturized.
- Do spend some time on pinterest and see what types of outfits/images are out there. There is much more to boudoir than a bride with her flowers and Victoria’s Secret.
- Do know that if you aren’t sure what lingerie to wear, bring a bunch and we can decide when you arrive.
- Do look around for lingerie. VS is great, but there are many more options that are more interesting, and beautiful, and sometimes less expensive.
- Do make sure that your lingerie either has had tags removed, or has been through the laundry.
- Do make sure to wear loose fitting clothing an hour prior and on the way to the shoot. Tight clothes, like bras, can create unwanted lines on your skin. Also, maybe wear a button or zip up shirt as to not disturb your hair.
- Do shave/wax everything that needs it!
- Do go for the hair and make-up. My make-up artists are wonderful, and yes it makes a huge difference. Besides getting more time to come and relax before your session, they know what kind of make-up looks good in photographs.
- Do think about your nails. If you have polish, make sure that it looks nice and isn’t chipped. In general I think that more subtle looks are better; french, light pink, or nude.
- Do give yourself some time before the shoot; take a hot bath, pamper yourself, let yourself become the calm, confident goddess you are.
- DO COMMUNICATE! This shoot is all about you and the most important thing is that you are comfortable and having a good time
Don’ts
- Don’t forget SHOES! It’s something that is easily forgotten but is so very important! Make sure they are new or clean. (Extra tip: I love black and nude)
- Don’t forget to also bring other props and items such as stockings, jewelry, or props you might want to use during the shoot, and be creative when choosing outfits. Even something as simple as a cardigan can be beautiful!
- Don’t worry too much. We’re going to have a fun time and create beautiful images together
