When DJ and Darby met, they were living in Texas. For their first date, they decided to walk around Palo Duro Canyon, which happens to be the second largest canyon in the US and is absolutely gorgeous! Fast forward two years, DJ & Darby are engaged, and Darby has moved to Omaha Nebraska for a job. When we were discussing their engagement session, they considered Texas because it was where they met, and because they knew it had a beautiful location that they loved. When they suggested to me, I was 100% on board!
So Darby left Omaha, and swung by KC to pick me up. What I haven’t mentioned is that Darby and I are old friends, so this road trip with her sounded like a great way to catch up! We drove to Texas to meet DJ at the AirB&B. The next couple of days were filled with take-out from their favorite restaurants, showing me a bit around where Darby used to live, and of course, the shoot!
Which almost didn’t happen! In the summer of 2020, the park had a reduced capacity. What we didn’t realize right away was that the slots were absolutely filled up. We’d driven all this way for this beautiful canon and we weren’t giving up! Though it was super last minute, we called the folks at Palo Duro Jeep Tours and explained the situation. They were able to get us in and helped us find the perfect locations (and even helped wrangle the dogs and took a few behind the scenes photos of us)! They saved the day and we had such a beautiful session as the sun was setting in Palo Duro Canyon.
This session was shot in the summer of 2020. Due to Covid-19, we had to take extra precautions to make sure we kept everyone safe. We all quarantined as much as possible before and after the trip, and then stayed in an AirB&B near the location so we could keep our exposure to a minimum. We all take covid very seriously and did everything in our power to everyone safe.
DJ & Darby had plenty of space. I was a bit closer to the edge; I planted my
feet and took a lot of deep breaths.
Totally awesome and amazing right?!
I could not be more excited for DJ & Darby’s wedding this October at the Oakwood Country Club! Based on what I’ve seen so far of what DJ & Darby have planned, it’s absolutely going to be one for the books!
