Spencer Studios is moving to Kansas City!

March 11, 2015

Big news!  Spencer Studios is off again, to Kansas City this time!  My husband will be continuing his education at UMKC, and I’m so proud of him.  We’ve been talking about this for a long time, but we made a final decision last Friday evening during date night.  Now we start the long and arduous process of making plans, moving us, home buying (which is terrifying all by itself), and moving the business.

Because this is so new, I don’t have a ton of information, but I wanted to release this information as soon as possible.  Here are some initial answers to the questions you might be thinking:

When are you leaving? We’re looking at early July.  Still tentative.

Will you still be shooting in Michigan?  Absolutely!  I have one wedding currently on the books after we believe we’ll have left, and I’ve been talking to a handful of brides for 2016.  I still shoot weddings in Nebraska (home for myself and my husband) and I’ve found that works best is having a set price for travel costs to Michigan.  I will be responsible for my own travel, and that fee will be an easier way for my couples to budget.

What about 2nd shooters?  This is an easy one.  I have tons of photographer friends here in Michigan that I love, and are awesome.  I’ll be able to find a 2nd shooter that lives here and not have that additional cost for my couples.  Depending on who it is, I might also be sleeping on their couch 😉

When will you start shooting in Kansas City?  I am taking weddings in Kansas City starting this Fall!  Because of this, I will be switching where I list myself as “based out of” immediately.

Missouri or Kansas?  Good question.  Obviously I will shoot in both, but we’re not sure yet where we’ll be living yet.  Luckily I’m a pro at collecting sales tax in two states.

So…are you excited?  Heck yes!  First off, I’m super proud of my hubby for taking this next step.  Also, this school’s mascot is a kangaroo, and who doesn’t like kangaroos?!  Also, this will move us closer to home.  Our families are based in Nebraska, and being far away, not being able to visit often or attend family functions, has been really hard on us.  We’re excited to be a bit closer to our people.  Also, it’s less cold 😉

I want to thank all of the wonderful photographers and wedding vendors who I have met here in Michigan and who have been such great friends and comrades for the last two years.  I think the thing I’ll miss most is the amazing community that I’ve had the joy to be a part of here.  I have learned so much from all of you, and I hope to bring that feeling of “we’re in this together” to anywhere I might travel.  You have truly changed me and how I do business.

Any other questions for me?? Write a comment!  I’ll keep you all updated as plans change and things happen as we prepare for the next chapter in our lives.
